Kotokuin (Kamakura Daibutsu)
- Published 2010.7.13
The symbol of Kamakura is of course, the large statue of Buddha, the daibutsu. For this, the Kotokuin temple has become a famous sightseeing spot. A wooden statue of Buddha was built in 1238, and in 1252, construction began on a bronze statue to replace it. The records from when the statue was completed were lost somewhere, so nobody knows what year it was actually completed.”
Daibutsu (Amitabha Buddha)
The statue has a height of 12.38 meters, and a mass of 121 tonnes.
Foundation stone
The large stone, with a diameter of over 1 meter, was once the base of one of the pillars at the Great Buddha Hall in Nara.
