Yokohama Foreigner’s Cemetery
- Published 2010.7.13
Over 4400 foreigners from around 40 different countries were buried here from the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century. In 1854, American sailor Robert Williams (24) stationed on a Mississippi battleship which had stopped at Yokohama Harbour died from falling off of the top mast. The US government asked for him to be buried where he could see the sea, which is how the cemetery came to be.
