Ashikaga School

Ashikaga School is known as Japan’s oldest university. Ashikaga School brings to mind the majestic appearance of Japan of days past. Since the Confucianism of ancient China comprises the main course of study at Ashikaga School, a Confucian shrine and a statue of a Confucius have been erected in his honor. In 1990, several huge wooden buildings of the old Ashikaga School were restored.
School Gate”学校門” While the gate is formally called the “Middle Gate”, it is known as School Gate due to its framed tablet of the Chinese characters that depict “school.” This is wooden structure was erected in 1668.
The Confucian Shrine”孔子廟” This is the oldest Confucian Shrine still existing in Japan. This wooden structure was erected in 1668.
The Hojo”方丈” Most of the main building is taken up by the hook in the front of, where the classes used to be held, and the former living quarters on the right. It also contains a garden with a pond and a man-made hill. Struk by lighting in 1754, the building was totally destroyed. However, rebuild and restore it in 1756. This wooden structure with a thatched roof has an area of 460.89 square meters.
