Nezu Shrine

This shrine is located across Tsutsuji Street, an area famous for rhododendron flowers (ツツジ). It is said that prince Yamato Takeru (日本武尊) built this shrine 1900 years ago. In 1706 the shrine was refurbished by fifth shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, and has become a cultural heritage site since. Inside the grounds are erected Mori Ogai’s Stone, as well as the Stone of Rest, where Natsume Soseki and Mori Ogai were said to have rested to contemplate. Recently, the shrine has just finished being repainted, bringing it back thirty years to what it used to look like.
