The Tokyo University of the Arts represents Japan in the area of fine arts (music, art). It was established in 1949 with the fusion of the Tokyo School of Art and the Tokyo School of Music. Also called “Geidai” (芸大), the Tokyo University of the Arts is where people planning to become musicians and artists aspire to go to. Many famous Japanese artists and musicians have graduated from Geidai. Artists Yokoyama Taikan, Hirayama Ikuo, Murakami Takashi graduated from the art department, and musician Sakamoto Ryuichi graduated from Geidai’s music department. Famous filmmaker Kitano Takeshi (Beat Takeshi) works as a professor at Geidai’s visual research department.
Ueno Park, which lies next to the Tokyo University of the Arts, houses the Sogakudo Music Hall, which used to be part of the Tokyo School of Music. Also, within Geidai’s art department campus lies the University Art Museum (東京藝術大学大学美術館), which holds numerous displays and exhibits including Geidai’s student works.
