Sogakudo Concert Hall
- Published 2010.7.13
Established in 1890, the Sogakudo Concert Hall, before being part of the Tokyo University of the Arts’ music department, was used as the main building for the Tokyo School of Music. On the second floor is a auditorium called the “concert hall” (奏楽堂). It is Japan’s oldest music hall, and the building itself is referred to in general as the “concert hall.” Concerts are still help to this day. In 1987, the Taito district moved the building to where it is today.
Within the concert hall on the second floor is the oldest pipe organ in Japan. Made by Abbot Smith, there are 1379 pipes in total. Even rare in world-terms, this organ uses the pneumatic action mechanism.
