- Published 2010.7.13
The Ameya Yokocho refers to the shopping district which runs straight and narrow along the west side of the elevated bridge between the JR Ueno station and the Okachimachi station. It is called Ameyoko for short.
There are several different theories about its origin. It is said that there were many candy stores (ameya) in the area, which came to become its name. Another explanation says that the American army brought a lot of goods to the markets, and the (Ame) from America become its name.
The shopping district was originally home to the black market after World War Two.Currently, there are many food, clothing, and jewellery stores which can be found at Ameyoko, and it is possible to barter prices with store employees. It is also famous for becoming crowded with people coming to buy fresh food at New Year’s.
