It was brought to Japan from China in the 16th century. It is used in the traditional Japanese New Year cuisine but since it has a strong bitter taste, removing the elements causing the strong taste is essential. The arrowhead is an indispensable vegetable to Japanese New Year. Moreover, there is a type of shochu (Japanese spirits distilled from sweet potatoes, rice, and other elements) made from arrowhead.
