Where to get Tofu

In Japan, tofu is a primary protein source. You can pretty much purchase tofu anywhere! In stores, Tofu is prepackaged in small plastic container boxes filled with water. Here is a list of places you can purchase tofu:

Supermarkets

People often purchase tofu at supermarkets as they are more reasonably priced. Usually there is an entire section dedicated for tofu. Back in the day, finding tofu in the West was relatively hard but due to the tremendous growth in the soy and tofu industries, it has become much easier to find. Two popular grocery stores in the U.S., who have been selling Tofu and soy products for years, are Trader Joe's and Whole Foods.

Convenience stores

Major convenience stores in Japan such as Seven Eleven, Lawson and Family Mart sell tofu that comes with soy sauce or salt. They also sell healthy salads with Tofu inside. There are not as many tofu varieties as supermarkets but it is convenient if you want tofu to-go.

Speciality shops

In Japan, you might here this term, "senmonten" a lot. Senmonten is basically a store that specializes in a certain product. Typical Japanese restaurants in the US offer every Japanese food you can think of. However, in Japan, every food has its own place. Tofu sold at specialty stores are made from scratch and they only use beans made in Japan so they are highly organic. Tofu senmontens are usually located in residential areas.
